Research Interests
I am using genetic markers to determine the sex ratio of African savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana) that are naturally re-colonizing a region of the southern rift valley of Kenya from which they have long been excluded. I will compare them to the sex ratios of elephants at the Maasai Mara and Amboseli Game Reserves. Comparing the sex ratios with those of the adjacent protected areas will help us understand whether migration and gene flow into this population is mediated primarily by male elephants.
